State of the Live Web, and Spark Buzz
April 5, 2007 | Media Trends | Tech Trends
Our friend Dave Sifry at Technorati issued his State of the Live Web report that contains some fascinating trends. As a team that’s constantly checking the pulse of new media and looking for signs that cutting-edge innovations are taking root with mainstream consumers, we always look forward to his report. See some of his findings below:
The Web is Self-Organizing: As a person who thrives on being organized, all I can say is “FINALLY!” Let’s get organized, people! Today, Technorati tracks over 230 million posts using tags or categories, and the number keeps growing. Over 35% of everything Technorati tracks is now tagged, compared to 25% two years ago. We Sparksters immediately think back to the days when we launched Flickr, who brought tagging to the masses. Wonder what Caterina and Stewart would have to say about the fact that tagging is truly becoming mainstream.
Farsi Skyrockets to #10 Written Language on the Live Web: Consider the anonymity that blogs provide to people living in an oppressive political environment, such as Iran, where Technorati sees most Farsi posts originating. There could be great socio-political implications here, and it’ll be interesting to watch how the press latches onto this stat with all of the news coming out of Iran.
22% of the Most Popular Media Web Sites are Blogs: Of the top 100 Websites in Q3 2006, only 12 were blogs, versus 22 of 100 in Q4 2006. As the distinction between user-generated and mainstream media is blurring rapidly, it reinforces the possibility that our children will never pick up a newspaper, but will rely on their friends and peers for the news, a theory being put into practice by companies like NowPublic.
Web 2.0 Expo is the other hot buzz around Spark today as quite a few teams gear up for announcements and speaking engagements. TellMe will be making an announcement about mobile search and Bix, Fon, and Technorati are all speaking. Spark has a presence too, with our own founder Donna Sokolsky speaking about PR 2.0. We’re also sponsoring a party to celebrate the launch of Om Malik’s new site, Found Read.
It’s shaping up to be a busy couple of weeks!
