Virgin Green Fund: Illuminating Technology

A Bright Story

Private equity firm Virgin Green Fund asked Sparkpr to help Metrolight, one of its portfolio companies, announce its funding round. Because the company was looking to expand its business in the U.S., it was important to secure broad coverage for both the funding and Metrolight’s electronic ballasts technology which can slash industrial lighting costs by as much as 65 percent.

Thinking Beyond The Expected

Knowing that pitching a straight forward funding story would only go so far in securing coverage, Sparkpr made the strategic decision to turn the story into a bigger lighting industry pitch. We went the extra length to define and expand support points, such as six percent of the world’s electricity is consumed by outdoor lighting, to reinforce the potential significance of this new technology.

The Press Lights Up

As a result of the bigger-idea strategy, coverage became significant. The Wall Street Journal went so far as to feature Metrolight and others in the space in a column entitled “Something Ventured.” This piece was picked up by the Associated Press and ran on Forbes.com, BusinessWeek.com to name a few.
